Description

This nail-biter from USA Today Best Selling author AJ Scudiere will have you on the edge of your seat. In NightShade nothing is as it seems… Eleri Eames didn’t think she’d ever be allowed to work for the FBI again, so the special FBI division of NightShade seems like an amazing opportunity. But all too soon, her chance to start over starts to disturb her. When the FBI offers Donovan a chance to leave his job as a medical examiner and try his hand at something new, he takes a chance on the NightShade division. Somehow, he has to try to escape from his shadows, but can he trust Eleri with the truth? Thrown together on their first case, Eleri and Donovan must deal with a charismatic cult leader and his true-believers. The cult is mixed up with several decade-old kidnapping cases and the missing daughter of a prominent FBI Agent. As Eleri and Donovan dig deeper, they discover that NightShade’s mysteries aren’t coincidence. Their secrets will save them . . . or destroy them. Very good read. I like this it’s not really a paranormal but in another sense it is. Good characters.

I would give it a 3 1/2 but ……the story is very good and the writing is well put together. However, there is so much procedural long winded it tends to drone on. I do like the characters and I may decide in the future to continue reading because I want to see what is in store for them.

I enjoyed reading this modern detective story with a supernatural twist. The writing keeps you hooked and not wanting to put the book down. The characters of Eleri and Donovan are complicated but easy to empathize with.

Sometimes you meet new characters and they won't leave you long after the book has ended. It's a good thing this is book one in what I hope is a long series. Eleri and Donovan are an unlikely pair but they play well against each other and fill in each other's gaps. There are so many hints at what is to come. I'm usually not a procedural reader, but the supernatural twist makes this a must-read series for me.

n NightShade nothing is as it seems . . . As a diehard fan of the X-files, I absolutely LOVED this book! Packed with action, thrills, an engaging investigative journey, and paranormal elements that blend seamlessly with the 'real' world, this story had me hooked from the get go. An elite and super secret FBI division called NightShade puts unlikely partners Eleri Eames and Donovan Heath on the hunt for a mysterious cult leader who has a penchant for abducting children. Rich girl turned hardcore senior agent Eames is surprised by the assignment, especially since it yanks her out of a stint in the mental hospital. She's even more surprised by her rookie partner, ME turned agent Heath, a man of few words, gruff manners, but with obvious smarts and great 'animal instincts.' Both agents have secret skills that can help crack the case, if they can learn to trust one another and if their gifts/curses don't destroy them in the process - especially when the true nature of NightShade and its primary mission come to light. ***SPOILER ALERT*** This is the most original take on the Shapeshifter/werewolf myth I've ever encountered, and boy does it ever work! The slow reveal of Donovan's secret works beautifully and blends with the narrative to explain his talents as an ME and investigator (super sensitive smell, anyone?) and his shortcomings as a man (the mother of all childhood secrets = no ties, no friends, and not the most well-developed social skills). Eleri is his perfect balance. With Southern charm mixed with dedication, smarts, and killer instincts on the job, there is more to the poor-little-rich-girl than Donovan first perceives. Especially when she trusts him with her secret - psychic abilities that she's been disguising as intuition - earning his trust and getting him to share his own secret for the first time...ever. In return, Donovan helps Eleri find the courage to channel the often painful and frightening psychic connections she can forge with victim and perpetrator, controlling it and using it to help take out the sociopath cult leader before he has the chance to murder his followers and escape. These two still have a long way to go, but luckily the end finds them called back for a second case. This is a team I definitely want to follow. Can't WAIT for the next installment!

Ms. Scudiere sets herself quite the task, two characters with secrets must work together to solve a dark riddle in an unusual circumstance. She performs admirably, juggling plot, character, back story with aplomb. The writing is sharp and the action is heart-pounding. I enjoyed this story and plunked down my card for volume 2.
