Description

After surviving a clandestine operation that went tragically wrong, Matt Drake escaped Syria with his life, but little else. Now, to save the life of another, he must return to Syria and confront his biggest failure in a stunning thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Tom Clancy Target Acquired and Hostile Intent.

Defense Intelligence Agency operative Matt Drake broke a promise. A promise that cost three people their lives and crippled his best friend. Three months later, he's paralyzed by survivor's guilt and haunted by the memories of the fallen. Matt may have left Syria, but Syria hasn't left him.

In the midst of his self-imposed exile, Matt is dragged back into the world of espionage and assets that he tried to forget. A Pakistani scientist working for an ISIS splinter cell has created a terrifying weapon of mass destruction. The scientist offers to defect with the weapon, but he trusts just one man to bring him out of Syria alive—Matt Drake.

It’s a suicide mission—one man against an army of terrorists. Still, with stakes this high, Matt has no choice but to try. He’s going in on high alert, but he’s blind to his greatest vulnerability. His most dangerous enemy is closer to home—not on the battlefield, but in the Oval Office.

5 Stars. Wow. Absolutely great. Looks like I’m hooked on another author and series. Drake is some character. Bentley wrote a thriller that will have me coming back for everything he can deliver. I usually hate unfinished stories and cliffhangers but I think there’s a lot more here to explore. Outstanding!

If the following except from this book doesn’t convince you that you should buy this book, then this book isn’t for you. “I’m not much for Braveheart speeches. Frankly, this organization doesn’t expect them. We pride ourselves on being the epitome of the quiet professional. We go about our nation’s business without fanfare or recognition. Our success is measured in hostages brought home and enemies removed from the battlefield. Even so, there is one ethos that we hold to above all else—‘I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy.’ That phrase is part of the Ranger Creed, but it also embodies this organization. Almost three decades ago, two of our brothers laid down their lives to protect their fallen comrades in the streets of Mogadishu. In response, we secured the crash sites and didn’t leave until we’d recovered every forensic piece of our fallen. This profession offers very little in terms of guarantees—we run toward the sound of gunfire knowing that each and every mission might be our last. But this we hold to as our holy writ—if you go into harm’s way, you will not be forgotten. We will expend every ounce of blood and sweat, down to the last full measure, to bring you home. Our entire task force is gathered for one reason—to bear witness as I make this same promise to you. You are going into harm’s way because a brother-in-arms has fallen into the hands of the enemy. There is no higher calling. I can’t promise you that you will survive this calling, but I will swear this—you will not be alone. When you call, we will answer. That is our vow. Questions?”

Started and finished in one day, couldn’t put it down. Great start Don. Waiting impatiently for “The Outside Man”.

Am not sure why authors have to get political. If your a liberal you may like this book though the story plot is only subpar. If your not a liberal stay away. Too many other authors like Ward Larsen, Tom Wood, Brad Thor, Mark McGreaney, Ben Coes do not bring politics into their story. Will never buy another book from this author. Above was my review after 135 pages. Decided to finish the book and am glad I did. I would say this is a 4.5 rating. I will look forward to his second book.

It’s truly hard to believe this is Don’s first novel. If you like Mitch Rapp, James Reece or Pike Logan you’ll love Matt Drake.

First novel-explosive. First person story riveting and a real page turner. Looking forward to reading more of Matt Drake and Frodo.
