Description

Everyone lives a lie.

It replays in my head, the moment of my greatest shame. I'll never escape it. With an exhale, I let go of everything. I fall endlessly, waiting for the sudden stop. Hell would be a welcome respite.

A hollow husk of the woman she used to be, Hannah hides from her pain with any alcohol she can find. She’s bleeding out from wounds no one sees. No one but Merdon, a dark fey with a violent history of his own, who’s determined to keep her from the one thing she wants most. Death.

She doesn’t understand why he cares about her or her addiction. It’s not like he’s nice to her. Yet, he’s relentless in his determination to show her there’s something to live for. If she can find a way through the pain she might just see what Merdon already knows: Second chances are rare.

The physical ache this book gave me is so, so real. Hannah’s journey is dark and her craving for an empty abyss is heart wrenching. Her character is an array of complex emotions, thoughts, nightmares, and fears. This isn’t your typical journey and that’s exactly why Hannah needed Merdon. He wasn’t the typical Fey and forced her to see some harsh truths even if it caused her to hate him more. Hate can be easy. Redemption though? That takes a will to live. • Book portrays abuse causally

I liked this series up until now. This book really didn’t do it for me. The causal way that everyone is okay with Merdon treating Hannah during her recovery was pretty sickening. In the real world that would be abuse and her ending up with his was basically Stockholm Syndrome. I’d been really looking forward to this book and now having read it I can’t imagine going back and rereading it like I’ve done with the others. It really leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

You never know how heavy or lighthearted the story you will get with this series. Each story is unique and different because the characters are different. Different backgrounds, different upbringing and different life changing events that brought them here. This one was on the heavy side. I knew coming into it, that it was gonna be a hard one but still never imagine what hanna actually went tu for her to be this deep into her depression and mean demeanor. Guilt can do that to you. This story hit too close to comfort to be honest and i started cringing at the beginning. I thought i wouldn’t be able to finish but the more a read the more i understood. It really nailed it. And even in the dark times.. theres always a little light and humor that i love. Melissa always finds a way to make me smile even when i cry. Cant wait for the next one!

This book gave me all the feels! I have been waiting for Hannah’s story. She seemed so broken and destroyed and I wanted to see how Merdon was going to fix her. I have never dealt with depression so severe or alcoholism, but the author is so good at writing Hannah’s trauma, that I fell like I’m going through it. I can understand her her and pain and understand why she wanted to end it. Even knowing that Merdon and Hannah’s friends were trying to help her, I felt betrayed along with Hannah at their tactics. I was hoping she would make them feel sorry even though she was the one that needed to be sorry! But I forgave them along with Hannah. So far, all the men have been known to listen whenever their women asked them to do something, but Merdon was nothing like his brethren! It really keeps you guessing! I loved that he was different and just what Hannah needed. The only thing I would change is more of them! I know there is more to the story but I wanted to see a like more sweetness from Merdon once he helped her. It wrapped up too quickly. I hope to get a peak of them in the next books! Let me start off by saying this if you haven’t read this series you are missing out big time! Have you ever read a book and 50 pages in started to feel sad because your 50 pages closer to the end and don’t want the book to end. That is how I feel each and every time I read a M.J. Haag book. Hannah’s story pulls at my heart I have known many people who have dealt with addiction even more reason to love this book! I would love to see Emily’s story soon! Melissa you have hit the ball far far far out of the park with this book and series. I received ARC copy of this book to review and I am voluntarily leaving this review.
