Description

From the New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water and Mr. Nobody comes “an unputdownable mystery about the nightmares that abound in the pursuit of Hollywood dreams” (Caroline Kepnes, author of the You series).

“Stylish, riveting, hugely atmospheric—I couldn’t put it down.”—Lucy Foley, author of The Guest List

A woman has gone missing. But did she ever really exist?

A leading British actress hoping to make a splash in America flies to Los Angeles for the grueling gauntlet known as pilot season, a time when every network and film studio looking to fill the rosters of their new shows entice a fresh batch of young hopefuls—anxious, desperate, and willing to do whatever it takes to make it.

Instead, Mia Eliot, a fish out of water in the ruthlessly competitive and faceless world of back-to-back auditioning, discovers the sinister side of Hollywood when she becomes the last person to see Emily, a newfound friend. Standing out in a conveyor-belt world of fellow aspiring stars, Emily mysteriously disappears following an audition, after asking Mia to do a simple favor. But nothing is simple. Nothing is as is seems. And nothing prepares Mia for a startling truth: In a city where dreams really do come true, nightmares can follow.

  • not the best thriller, but it’s ok

This was alright… I felt like the first half of the book was really slow, just constantly asking “where is that girl? where is she?” but no real follow up happening within the plot until the end. It’s a quick read for sure

Started out ok. Then the storyline got more and more unrealistic.

Pleasurably convoluted, suspenseful and, as ever, well written. The main protagonist is likable, as a fallible, naive, but bright young woman who is plunged in the weirdness of L.A.’s movie world. Much to like in this latest novel.

Surpassed my high expectations as I read Catherine Steadman's newest page-turner. Her "Something in the Water" is a book I'm now measuring my book choices against and this one proved her talent again. I sped through "The Disappearing Act" in two days of reading this thrilling, atmospheric suspense novel. Highly recommend!
  • Thriller of the summer!

Catherine Steadman does it again, delivering the summer’s must-read thriller! Something in the Water was a great debut, but Mr. Nobody didn’t live up to the hype. The Disappearing Act not only lives up to the hype and expectations but is in my opinion the best of her three books. The story opens with Mia, an up-and-coming actress just on the verge of making it in her native London. Her agent sends her to LA & Hollywood for a few casting calls and auditions with studios and producers to take the next step in her career. It’s at one of these casting calls that she meets Emily, a few actress, with whom she makes a brief but memorable connection. Only Emily goes missing just after they meet and Mia becomes worried about her new friend’s mysterious disappearance. As Mia delves more into what happened to Emily, she learns more and more about Hollywood’s unsavory power and influence. Unsure of who she can trust, she must decide what she’s willing to do in order to maintain everything she’s worked so hard for and to get where she is. This kept me hooked until the very last page, not knowing when or where the next twist would come from.
