Description

After what seems like a routine murder investigation, LAPD Detective Harry Bosch finds himself in Hong Kong facing the highest-stakes case of his life: bringing his kidnapped daughter home.
Fortune Liquors is a small shop in a tough South L.A. neighborhood, a store Bosch has known for years. The murder of John Li, the store's owner, hits Bosch hard, and he promises Li's family that he'll find the killer.
The world Bosch steps into next is unknown territory. He brings in a detective from the Asian Gang Unit for help with translation -- not just of languages but also of the cultural norms and expectations that guided Li's life. He uncovers a link to a Hong Kong triad, a lethal and far-reaching crime ring that follows many immigrants to their new lives in the U.S.
And instantly his world explodes. The one good thing in Bosch's life, the person he holds most dear, is taken from him and Bosch travels to Hong Kong in an all-or-nothing bid to regain what he's lost. In a place known as Nine Dragons, as the city's Hungry Ghosts festival burns around him, Bosch puts aside everything he knows and risks everything he has in a desperate bid to outmatch the triad's ferocity.
Featuring ebook bonus materials including an in-depth interview with the author about writing "Nine Dragons," photos from his exciting travels while writing the book, and a link to an online promotional video.

A fresh Bosch story unlike any other. Adding international intrigue gave it more dimension and more flavor.

Michael Connelly transforms the mundane into the magnificent. Nothing pleasant about a murder in a neighborhood family convenience store… but the frenetic and unexpected cross-Pacific chase of its possible perpetrators had me rapidly turning pages, and thankfully ignoring the evening news. Clever plot twists, an inside look at police work, and well done character development inspired these encomiums. Fun to read! A page turner.

Connelly’s books are always entertaining. I felt that the last chapter was hurried, almost as if there was a cap on total pages and therefore summarized instead of narrated. But overall, still a great read.

Great book, had twists and turns on every page you turned. Connelly keeps me coming back for more Bosch and Haller. True life characters that you can relate to. I enjoy these stories very much and I’m gonna continue to read them all.

Convoluted plot and narrative. Unlike other Bosch books, impossible to imagine or believe.
  • First disappointing Connelly

I've read every Connelly and this is the first disappointment. I'm trying not to give too much away, but the entire plot hinges on a coincidence that stretches disbelief into implausibility. The book feels rushed and poorly thought through.
  • Worst of the series.... So far...

It is a bit frustrating - the last book (the narrows) was brilliant, and this one was really not good. The language was awkward, just not flowing. I wonder if Connelly has a ghost writer helping him to make deadlines and that guy is just not up to scratch? And then Harry had to live through a lot of personal drama - none of which was in the least bit believable. Still a big Harry Bosch fan, but man! I hope Connelly gets his stuff together in the drop....

This book was impossible to put down, I was up late every night reading it. One of the best Harry Bosch books yet. Kept you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommend this book.
