Description

iBooks Author is the first tool of its kind. Never before have publishers, authors, and content creators had a tool for making dynamic, interactive ebooks in a WYSIWYG environment. This book is intended to get you up and writing in iBooks Author. You’ll learn what to expect from this new tool and what its strengths and limitations are. You’ll see how you can create beautifully designed pages and how you can bring those designs to life with interactive content in ways that, before now, were only possible in a web browser on the Internet. You’ll also find out how to navigate the occasionally tricky terrain of Apple’s ecosystem so that you can get your book published to the iBookstore.

It would be great if we can get an updated version of this book (since it is such a wonderful resource). For example, .ibooks and .epub files exported from iBA will now work in iBooks for iPhone, iPad, and OSX. The book says that it will only work on iPad, which is not the case anymore.
  • Does a good job of covering the program

I found it clearly written, as I've expected from O'Reilly Press. You can learn most of what you need from this book. The only drawback is that it is similar to other Computer books that walks you through the different capabilities of the Program without addressing what different users will need. iBooks Author is a tremendously capable program full of features many, if not most authors will never use. I would have preferred it if it were organized by the type of book you wanted to publish, from a simple novel with a cover picture and perhaps small graphics at the beginning of each chapter, to textbooks, to wide open multimedia works or business documents. As it is, you can read through the whole thing and not really be sure how to start or what should govern the choices you make. E-books are a wonderful invention, but there are reasons e-book readers emulate paper books. For centuries a great deal of care has gone into their design. For most books, there isn't any reason to reinvent the wheel. Simple layouts let the reader focus on the content. Too much emphasis is made of all the amazing things you can do without any on how to do just enough.

  • A better read than others

If you're creating an iBook, this is a useful read. The book covers the basics and is highly useful if your making a book and have a problem or two to solve. It's short, a reasonable read and filled with helpful information. It is not a step by step tutorial based series of exercises. It's probably best to have already used iBook Author, when you pick this book up. The widget section is not very useful for anything but existing widgets. In short a useful book, and more useful than others I've read.
  • To complicated?

This book was ok until you get to the part where you publish. It makes the task of publishing seem way to complicated. You don't have to have an ISBN, to publish books you sell. I would suggest going to Apples website and check out direct connect yourself. I almost didn't finish my book because of this info. I do love iBook Author! It is not complicated at all.
