Description

Arthur Honeycutt, a new and very naive antiques dealer addicted to the Arts and Crafts Period and a lively expression from that era, ragtime, declares to his highly skeptical wife Penny, "We're treasure hunters, Penny, Arts and Crafts treasure hunters. Think childhood, think dreams. Darwin was wrong about those damn monkeys of his. We're descended from squirrels. Collectorsll go nuts here!" In addition to his critical wife, he must cope with all sorts of unpleasant people: an arrogant but famously knowledgeable collector/dealer named Jeffrey Dillsworth; Guy Willowtree, a sleazy antiques picker; a pompous, rich, overbearing customer, the ber snobbish Harriet Vanderhorst; and bombastic consignors such as Andrew Cannon. He has much to learn about antiques and life even as he hungers and hunts, like other fanatics in the game, for the Holy Grail of Arts & Crafts, a long-missing treasure by the renown Gustav Stickley. By play's end his character has changed. For the better might be debatable, but at least his wife approves.
