Description

If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders — the Adept —  was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it. That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled … except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.

Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic is the first book in the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

Entertaining and different. This is a stand-alone which is great for a series and appreciated.

I, to put it bluntly, was wrong. I had thought the witch, werewolf, and vampire genre to be completely tapped out. Overdone to the point where there was nothing new or interesting left to discover. But this gem of a book proved me very wrong. It’s a well written, well paced, story that avoids the overdone clichés. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Loved the first book of the dowser series! Interesting and different with a fun twist to a storyline. Jade is a baker in her own cupcake shop, a half-witch and something else that a vampire and a werewolf find interesting and drawn to her magic. They are there to help find a killer that has murdered a magical being and stop the killer.

It was an interesting cast of characters, well developed. A twist to the story changed up the ending. Dragged a bit in places but then would pick up nicely.
  • Light but very catchy

It was pretty good I’m just so frustrated at how incredibly dense the protagonist is
  • Intriguing premise

Though the answer to “Who done it?” was painfully clear from the beginning of the story, I kept reading as I enjoy stories of individual’s discovery of their new powers. The writing style is too chatty for my taste and the heroine is a bit obtuse. However, the story premise is intriguing; will follow the series to see where the author takes it.
